Open-Source EDA Has Become Too Valuable for the Big Three to Ignore
The open-source versus commercial EDA debate is increasingly detached from how chip design actually works.
Most engineering teams already use a mixture of proprietary tools, open-source software, internal scripts and custom infrastructure. They choose tools based on what the design requires, rather than loyalty to one model.
AI agents will make that mixed approach more common.
Agents need tools they can access, query, connect and automate. Open-source EDA is well suited to that environment because its interfaces, source code and underlying data structures are available to inspect and adapt. Commercial tools will remain important, particularly for verification, process support and sign-off, but open tools can give AI agents more freedom to explore design options and coordinate work across the flow.
This could become one of the strongest drivers of open-source EDA adoption.
Siemens’ acquisition of Precision Innovations suggests that the major commercial vendors recognise the direction of travel.
Precision Innovations has built valuable technology around OpenROAD. Siemens now wants that capability inside its wider portfolio, particularly for chip planning, design exploration and PPA optimisation.
The acquisition is therefore about more than adding another tool to a commercial product suite. It reflects a broader shift in how EDA technology is developed and delivered. Open-source projects are creating capabilities with enough technical and commercial value to influence what the largest vendors choose to build, integrate and buy.
AI will increase that value further.
As agents take on more design exploration, flow orchestration and repetitive engineering work, they will favour tools that can be combined and controlled programmatically. Open-source EDA provides a natural foundation for that model. Commercial vendors can either support that ecosystem or risk watching new workflows develop around them.
This also makes the future relationship between Siemens, Precision Innovations and the OpenROAD Initiative important.
Precision Innovations now sits inside one of the Big Three, while OpenROAD remains part of a wider research and open-source community. The industry will be watching to see whether Siemens continues to contribute upstream, how commercial development is separated from open development, and whether future improvements remain available to the wider ecosystem.
That is the real test created by the acquisition.
Siemens has an opportunity to show that commercial ownership and open development can reinforce each other. It can bring greater resources, engineering support and industry adoption to technology built around OpenROAD. It could also weaken the open ecosystem if the most valuable capabilities gradually move behind proprietary boundaries.
The outcome will matter beyond one company or one project. It will help determine whether open-source EDA becomes shared infrastructure for the next generation of AI-assisted chip design, or simply a source of technology for commercial vendors to absorb.
The industry has spent too long asking whether open tools can replace the commercial stack. That was never the most useful question.
The better question is which combination of open tools, commercial products, AI agents and specialist engineering support gives a team the best chance of reaching tapeout.
For many companies, that combination is already taking shape.
Open-source EDA no longer needs to prove that it belongs in serious chip design. AI agents are likely to make it more useful, more widely adopted and more strategically important.
The Big Three are no longer deciding whether to engage with open-source EDA.
They are deciding how much of its future they want to control.
